Woman doused with a flammable substance in Tobago dies

Af­ter spend­ing ap­prox­i­mate­ly five months at hos­pi­tal in crit­i­cal con­di­tion, El­lena Di­al 19, who was doused with a flam­ma­ble sub­stance in Jan­u­ary has died.

Di­al, who lived at Rise­land Trace, Carn­bee, suf­fered third de­gree burns on ap­prox­i­mate­ly 90 per cent of her body. She died at the Mt. Hope Hos­pi­tal on Wednes­day night.

Sgt Ster­ling, of the Crown Point Po­lice Sta­tion, laid charge.

Around 8.50 pm on Jan­u­ary 28, 2020, Di­al, a kitchen as­sis­tant em­ployed with the Tris­tar Restau­rant, was set on fire by a man known to her.

We are told that she ran in­to the Apex Restau­rant lo­cat­ed at Kil­gwyn Ex­ten­sion, Canaan, plead­ing for help. Emer­gency first aid was ad­min­is­tered by the staff and EHS was called. She suf­fered third de­gree burns about her body.

She was tak­en to the Scar­bor­ough Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal for treat­ment and was sub­se­quent­ly air­lift­ed to Trinidad for ad­vanced med­ical care.

The To­ba­go Homi­cide Bu­reau is con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions

Fol­low­ing the in­ci­dent, An­to­nio Mar­celle, 20, a labour­er, of Les Coteaux, was charged with at­tempt­ed mur­der. He is cur­rent­ly on $400,000 bail.

To­ba­go Homi­cide Bu­reau Of­fi­cers told Guardian Me­dia that a file would now sub­mit­ted to the Di­rec­tor of Pub­lic Pros­e­cu­tions with rec­om­men­da­tions for the charge against Mar­celle to be up­grad­ed
