Two years after Averzon Miller vanished, her family says they are still living in limbo, waiting for confirmation about whether a decomposed body on the beach is hers.
“My sister has been missing since 2023—we will like to know what is going on with the body with respect to Averzon Miller,” said her sister, Kealizanda Grant. “It’s been two years now my sister’s kids are still waiting at the door, hoping that she is home.”
Miller, a mother of six from Cap-de-Ville, Point Fortin, went missing on July 15, 2023. Days later, on July 21, a badly decomposed body was discovered on a beach off Food Crop Beach Road in Chatham.The head was buried in the sand, and the body was clad in a brassiere and a cloth covering the back.
Miller’s relatives viewed the body at the Forensic Science Centre (FSC) on September 3, 2023, and DNA samples were taken from Grant’s father and nephew.
“We really need some type of closure into this,” lamented Grant, who wore Miller’s jeans for the interview, as she said it brought her comfort.
“At least if it is her, we know; if it is not, well, then it is okay, but if it is, we will like to get the body to get her buried.”
She said residents saw Miller in distress before she was taken into a white car by someone she knew along the main road. That day, she said, her sister was carrying a significant sum of money after changing lottery Play Whe slips.
“I believe he took the money from her and got rid of her,” Grant said.
Complaining that investigators had never followed up and their trips to the FSC had yielded no results, she said, “Forensic has never called us back or anything, and it is agonising to know that she probably lie down in the mortuary still.”
“I don’t think that we are being treated fairly… I just want a lil closure,” Grant said.
She said her sister’s disappearance had torn the family apart. Miller’s six children—three adults and three minors—are now separated.
“Sometimes I wake up in the night crying because I cannot do nothing about it. The three little ones, I would really like them to be at peace,” lamented Grant.
Miller was 43 years old when she vanished.
When contacted, Snr Supt Thompson said he would look into the matter and provide feedback, but none was forthcoming up to press time.
