The Commissioner of Police has condemned the alleged action of a Woman Police Constable, who was scheduled to appear before a Master of the High Court at the Chaguanas Police Station yesterday after being charged with three counts of Larceny by Trick. The WPC is accused of receiving over $35,000 to speed up the process for granting a licence to carry a gun.
In a statement issued yesterday, the TTPS said WPC Misty Mitchell was formally charged at the Caroni Police Station by Ag Sgt Joefield on Thursday. Police said investigations began after a report of larceny by trick was filed on July 23, following allegations that Mitchell had defrauded a man by promising to expedite his Firearm User’s Licence (FUL) application.
Police claimed that in March this year, Mitchell allegedly obtained $35,000 from the victim under false pretences. She later demanded an additional $15,000, which was arranged to be collected on July 26. On that day, officers from the Professional Standards Bureau (PSB), with support from a specialised unit, carried out a sting operation at a Chaguanas service station. Mitchell was arrested and searched, and $2,000 allegedly provided by the victim was recovered. She was taken to the Caroni Police Station and released on the advice of Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard, SC, pending further enquiries.
Police said after further investigations, Mitchell was re-arrested on August 21 and charged with three counts of larceny by trick for the following incidents:
• Between March 5 and 10, 2025, allegedly stole $17,000 by trick
• March 14, 2025, allegedly stole $18,000 by trick
• July 26, 2025, allegedly stole $2,000 by trick
The TTPS statement said Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro condemned the officer’s actions. He said, “The Commissioner’s discretion in the issuance of Firearm User’s Licences (FULs) is not a commodity. Any attempt to compromise this process, whether by members of the public or officers within the ranks, will be met with swift, uncompromising action. If you choose to barter integrity for greed, understand this: you risk not only your freedom, but your career, your reputation, and your future. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service will not be complicit in silence, nor will it be gentle in response.”
