Njisane Phillips will have to pick himself up quickly after his disappointment at placing fourth in the Match Sprint Cycling Finals yesterday at the London Olympics. A reflective Phillips stated: "I am disappointed. I could not have least got the bronze medal but it was a great experience being on the track with some of these guys. I tried my best but it was just not to be." " I was just happy to put T&T on the map. Everyone is calling our name,"added Phillips. The 21-year-old will have less than 24 hours to recover as he races against Sir Chris Hoy of Great Britain, the defending Olympic champion, in the first round heat 1 at 5 am (TT time) . "The Keirin is not my best event, but I am going to go out there and have fun and just try to be more aggressive in this race ,"said Phillips.
The second round and finals will also be held from 12.57 pm ( T&T time) Meanwhile, Rondel Sorrillo returns to the track at Olympic Stadium today, looking to bounce back in the Men's 200 metres at the London Games in England. Sorrillo, who bowed out of the 100m in the semifinal round on Sunday, will again have to contend with the likes of Olympic 100m champion Usain Bolt, who is seeking more Olympic glory, and silver-medallist Johan Blake. Bolt will be targeting retaining his 200m title also. Before the 30th Olympiad though, Bolt suffered shock defeats to Jamaican teammate Yohan Blake in both the 100m and the 200m at the Jamaican Trials. The 26-year-old rebounded though and raced away in style to cop his second Olympic 100m title in 9.63 seconds. In 2009, Bolt set the world record of 19.19 to become the world 200m champion. Blake also posted the second fastest time ever of 19.25.
Sorrillo has not ventured close to the leading men's times, running a season best of 20.40 in July in Lucerne, Switzerland. He clocked 20.48 to seal the 200m title at the National Championships in Port-of-Spain in June. At the Guadeloupe Invitational back in May, Sorrillo finished in second place in 20.42 behind winner Churandy Martina of the Netherland Antilles (20.40).Sorrillo again finished in second place in the 200m in 20.57 at the Cayman Invitational, second behind winner Warren Weir of Jamaica (20.13).Both Martina and Weir are also competing in the event with the heats running off from 6.50 am T&T time. Duo Mikel Thomas and Wayne Davis get into the action in the Men's 110m hurdles from 5.10 am (T&T time). This is Thomas's second trip to the Olympics and he feels bless to be in London. "It's a bigger blessing now and I am glad to be here and also honoured to be here," said Thomas. "The biggest challenge in my event is the hurdle. I can't worry about anybody else's race I have to focus on my race. The focus is executing a perfect time if I do that then I can roll with anybody."
