As our nation engages in its new normal form of education, one can expect it to be a time filled with mixed emotions. Considering this, I wish to offer some simple words of inspiration and advice to all stakeholders in education.
To the parent or guardian who thinks their child’s school is not doing enough, believe me when I say this process has been a tedious one. It takes a lot to plan for EVERY child when they are all in different circumstances. I therefore implore you to be patient with the teachers and administration as it is a new process for them. Every day and every class we are learning new things about the technology we are using, and it has not been an easy task for some. Teachers have families as well and still on weekends and nights we are planning for your children. Teachers as super as they are, only human and have limitations. Something we all sometimes tend to forget.
To the teacher who thinks their student is lazy or parent is being difficult, please remember that they may also have limitations. Be it one device with multiple children, no one to supervise while at work or social and financial issues. Today I ask you to be there for your students and support the parents in any way you can. So, when a student misses an online class or does not submit right away let us keep in mind that it may be tough for them as well. More than ever we need to be patient and understanding during this time.
To the students: it is your sole purpose at this point to learn and be active in your learning process. Do not use internet connections and lack of devices as an excuse not to do work. There are many ways in which you can learn. Where there is a will there is always a way! Be proud that you have an opportunity to be educated when in the world there are so many that do not. Keep in mind that your teachers care about you and will get you to where you need to be. Show them the respect they deserve and do the work that has been so well thought out for you.
As we all proceed with this Term 1 of the academic year 2020-2021, let us all remember to be patient, respectful and kind.
Happy teaching/learning.
Teacher, parent, and student
