Port-of-Spain and Environs education district reigned supreme yesterday in the Atlantic National Primary Schools District Football Tournament, copping the boys' and girls' titles at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella. The girls' team overcame a commendable performance from Tobago, to win 2-1 on penalty kicks in the opener. It was less of a challenge though in the boys' division final as Port-of-Spain stopped Caroni 3-1. The Port-of-Spain boys' team dominated the match from the kickoff with Rashawn Murphy netting the opening item in the 12th minute.
His teammate Caton St Hilaire (17th) returned five minutes later to give Port-of-Spain a 2-0 advantage. The North side went up 3-0 following the effort of Michael Gittens, who scored in the 27th. The score remained that way up to the halfway mark. The second half proved to be fruitless for Port-of-Spain as they failed to extend their lead. Caroni though, got a consolation goal from Daniel Christmas, seven minutes before the match ended. In the girls' clash, goalless after regulation and extra time, the winner was decided through penalty kicks.
Kaydeen Jack stepped up and scored the first goal for Port-of-Spain after Tobago missed its first attempt. Megan Henry equalised for the Tobago unit but Ria Russell kept Port-of-Spain ahead, netting the second from the penalty spot. Her goalkeeper Ayana Harrigan made a brilliant save on the next kick and with Tobago missing its final two attempts, Port-of-Spain celebrated the crown. Defender Allyah Charles emerged the "Most Valuable Player" (MVP) of the girls division while Port-of-Spain midfielder Micah Lansiquot copped the award for the boys.
