T&T men and women teams made winning starts to their quest to qualify for the London 2012 Olympic Games Beach Volleyball Tournament, yesterday. This was on the opening day of the Caribbean Zonal phase of the Norceca Beach Volleyball qualifiers at the Beach Volleyball Courts, Saith Park, Chaguanas. First to take to the courts, were Pauline Woodroffe and Elki Phillip who punished Valissia Brathwaite and Nysha Lindo of the US Virgin Islands 21-6, 21-11 while the other local women's pair, Billingy and Dyette had a 21-3, 21-8 victory over the same players.
The top ranked Toco-born duo of Daneil Williams and Fabien Whitfield brushed aisde Suriname's Dion Hugo Brunings and Roberto Frits Joval 21-13, 21-19 and while fellow T&T players' Christian Francois and Kevin Rivers stopped Michael Ong a Kwie and Clyde Akaamba also of Suriname 21-15, 21-19. The T&T teams were expected to come up against Suriname in reverse pairs matches after press time last night to close out day one play. From the tournament, the top four men and women teams will advance to the second round Continental qualifier, where the winner will qualify for the Olympics. The second and third placed teams will qualify for the FIVB World Beach Volleyball Cup, earning another chance to clinch a place at the Olympics.
