It was a grand affair on Thursday evening when the Trinidad Guardian Sport Desk and friends gathered to celebrate the yuletide season and recognise the work of its reporters. For the second consecutive year senior reporter Vinode Mamchan was named the "Sportwriter of the Year". Mamchan, nicknamed "Mr Exclusive" by his colleagues, was praised for his productivity and industriousness.
Copping the "Personality of the Year" award was Nigel Simon, the premier football reporter. Simon also efficiently covered a number of other sports including hockey, volleyball, table-tennis, tennis and swimming. Rachael Thompson-King walked away with the "Spirit of the Desk" award, veteran reporter Everard Gordon was the most improved on the desk while Nicholas Clarke got the most dependable prize. In memory of former cricket reporter Naz Yacoob, who passed away in august, an award was presented to the top Youth Cricketer of the Year, Nicholas Alexis.
