Young Stephen Katwaroo made the national selectors stand and take notice of him yesterday, when he spanked 152 on the second day of the national cricket trials at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain. Replying to the Gibran Mohammed's XI first innings score of 233, the Rayad Emrit XI made 465 all out. Also scoring a century was Ceramic Merryboys player Aneil Kanhai. Katwaroo, who plays for Clico Preysal, was voted top student at the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB) Academy awards recently and he showed that he benefitted from the stint.
He scored 152 off 200 balls with 13 fours and three sixes. He and Kanhai forged a fifth-wicket partnership off 243 runs to take the game away from Emrit's team. Kanhai, who scored 143 in the last trial, was again in top form and got 141 off 203 balls with 14 fours and one six. The pick of the bowlers for the Gibran Mohammed XI was left arm unorthodox spinner Dave Mohammed. He finished with six wickets for 105 runs. Gibran Mohammed's XI facing a deficit of 232 runs, finished the second day on 113 for three with Dr Tishan Maraj not out on 52 and Nicholas Sookdeosingh getting 27. The match continues today at 9.30 am. (VM)
