Over 100 of the country's top cyclists will be on show when the T&T Cycling Federation opens its 2011 season with a 66km Road Race from the Mucurapo Foreshore to Couva and back on Sunday beginning at 7 am. The event will be the first of a five-part weekly road racing series mixing short road races, individual time trails and a circuit race every Sunday until February 27. The types of races were selected to enhance cyclist preparations for upcoming track events and to be used as an important rough guide for the TTCF Racing Committee in observing the fitness levels of the country's road cyclist vying for selection in both the road race and ITT at Pan Am Championships in May 2011.
For these reasons, the TTCF has asked all cyclists to place their bikes on the starting line for these events. Points will be awarded for the top six cyclists overall and top four in each other category. In an attempt to make the race more competitive, a bonus of three points will be awarded if the winner finishes the race in one hour, 45 minutes or under. Due to safety concerns from the police, cyclists who are dropped before the flyover at Grand Bazaar with no chance of connecting to the peloton will be eliminated from the race. This will apply to cyclists in all categories.
The TTCF will not allow the children's category (BMX) to participate in this event for their own and others cyclist's safety. Registration for Sunday's race will be open from 6.20am to 6.50am. The entry fee will be $20 per cyclist in all categories.
