Janeil Bellille was on fire at the Texas Tech Open at the Terry and Linda Fuller Complex, Texas Tech University yesterday, taking the women's 400m hurdles in a quick 55.80 seconds. Bellille won the first of three heats for South Plains College and set a new personal best improving on her previous time of 56.81 at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico last August. She was also in action in the women's 4x100m helping South Plains to silver. The Neon Trackers athlete ran the lead off leg for her school which clocked 44.84, to finish behind hosts Texas Tech (44.04). With her time Bellille is now the second fastest TT's woman over the 400m hurdles behind 2009 World
championships bronze medallist Josanne Lucas (53.20) and is the third fastest so far this season.
Kai Selvon was in fine form as she sped to double gold for the second straight week. The Auburn University student was part of her school's victorious 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams at the Auburn Tiger Classic in Alabama over the weekend. In the sprint relay, Auburn clocked 43.80 while in the mile relay the winning time was 3:38:82. At the Big Ten vs SEC Challenge Meet in Mississippi on March 26, Selvon was also a double winner taking women's 200m in 23.38 and then was part of her school's winning 4 x100m team (44.29). Wisconson-Milwaukee athlete Durrell Busby was also in winner's row, racing to gold in the men's 110m hurdles in 14.24 seconds at the Big Blue Classic at the Eastern Illinois Univesity last week. Busby's time betterd his school's record of 14.40 seconds. In the heats, Busby was third overall in 14.58 (wind assisted).
At the LSU Outdoor Invitational, Louisiana State University (LSU) students Semoy Hackett, Ade Alleyne-Forte and Kyron Blaise all grabbed silver medals. Hackett helped her school's 4x100m relay team to second in 43.48. The LSU quartet was beaten to the line by Texas A&M (43.16). Samantha Shukla of Wichita State was second in the women's 800m at the Wichita State Tri-meet. Shukla clocked 2:25:12. Her school-mate T&T's Scarla Nero was fourth in the 1500m (4:51:72). At the Toledo Collegiate Challenge, Ohio on Saturday, Kirlene Roberts' Central Michigan women's 4x100m team was first in 46.09. Roberts was seventh in the women's 100m in 12.56. The Memphis athlete was also part of her school's 4x400m team which finished eighth (4:12:63).
