T&T swimmer, George Bovell III will take to the pool today in the men's 50m freestyle heats at the seventh Swim Cup Eindhoven, Netherlands after recovering from a freak toe injury. On Tuesday, the 27-year-old Bovell III's participation in the four-day meet being organised by the Eiffel Swimmers was in doubt after he cut his toe prior to his departure from Madrid, Spain where he won gold in the 50 metres freestyle (22.38 secs) at the Spanish Spring Nationals Swimming Meet eight days ago. A bronze medal winner at the Athens Greece Olympics, Bovell got a cut on his toe while walking in the dark to the rest room and needed three stitches.
At first, it was felt that the top T&T swimmer, who began the year with three gold medal performances in Port Elizabeth, South Africa would miss the splash in Holland due to the injury.Bovell is expected to face stiff competition from Sebastian Verschuren, Russian recruit Sergey Fesikov and Sweden's Stefan Nystrand who secured the top three places in the 100m freestyle final yesterday.Following today's event, Bovell will head to Jacksonville, Florida for a meet on Saturday and Sunday.
