Limers United captured the first major title in the 2011 bpTT Mayaro Windball Night Cricket Competition when they won the women's round-robin championship at the official launch of the competition at the Mayaro Recreation Ground last Saturday. After bowling their hearts out to restrict defending champions Bomb Squad to 14 for 1 in the two-over final, Limers United never let up their domination and got to the target with five balls to spare. The 9th Annual Mayaro Windball Night Cricket Competition is organised by the Mayaro/Guayaguayare Unemployed Organisation and Concerned Citizens (MGUOCC) and is fully sponsored by energy company bpTT, whose home community is Mayaro.
Ronda Francis, manager, Corporate Social Responsibility, bpTT, officially opened the competition: "There is no doubt that this is one of the most exciting and well-organised cricket competitions in the country. We are proud to partner with the MGUOCC and we all look forward to a keen and exciting season. This is a great initiative and bpTT is always ready to support any positive project for Mayaro."
The competition kicked off with a colourful March Past and parade that featured an impressive turnout of 28 teams.Bedecked in brilliant blue and yellow, Cushe Palancing Girls impressed the judges with their marching skills and took home the top prize in the female category while West Indies Youths stepped their way to first place in the male division.
President of the MGUOCC, Marlon Sylvan explained the significance of the competition, "This is about getting people from the community to come out to play and watch cricket and just have some good wholesome family entertainment. It has become one of the key events on the Mayaro calendar and people come from all over to share in the experience. This promises to be the best competition ever and the next two months will be an exciting time for cricket lovers." he said.
Due to the number of teams, the men's division of the round-robin could not be completed at the launch and the winners will be decided when the competition resumes on Thursday.Captain of Cushe Palancing Girls, Vanessa Francis, was excited about the upcoming season."This really is a great atmosphere to come out and compete, and this year we have new lights and the field has been repaired," she said."Every year they try to do something to make it better and the teams and spectators really appreciate that. We are going to try our best to win the league but no matter what, I know that we'll have a great time."
