Canford Cliffs is the best miler on this planet and champion trainer, Richard Hannon intends proving it (again!) this season. The four-year-old Tagula colt kicks off 2011 in the group one, £175,000 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury today, when the only danger appears to be Dick Turpin, a stable-companion which, according to the Marlborough 'winning machine', "is fitter!" Dick Turpin won his seasonal debut three weeks ago whereas, Canford Cliffs hasn't raced for 290 days. It's inevitable they'll clash regularly but significantly and surprisingly, Richard Hughes has opted for Canford Cliffs, with Ryan Moore on, presumably, the 'second string!'
A hint of sarcasm there because from a betting perspective, Dick Turpin makes more appeal as an each-way 'steal' at odds of around 4/1. Early 'tissues' suggest punters will have to go 'over' (odds-on!) the 'Cliffs!' On official ratings, Canford Cliffs is 3lbs superior but my time-handicap suggests that no one knows, including Hannon and this promises to be THE action on a wonderful eight-race card, which includes a 'penalty-kick' in the Maiden Stakes over seven furlongs, once-raced Quadrant. As mentioned earlier this week, Brian Meehan reckons his Manton string close to firing on all cylinders. Quadrant is considered potential graded quality and impressed. when fourth to Dubawi Sound in a fast-run race.
Third home, Colombian, confirmed its value a week or so later. Another yard that is already firing thus, is that of Henry Candy who, significantly, journeys Ardlui a long trek to Thirsk for the Maiden Stakes over twelve furlongs. Look no further for the winner, my nap! Later, down the road during Doncaster's evening meeting, Dark Isle is strongly-fancied to make it third time lucky in the Maiden Stakes over six furlongs. Seb 'The Enforcer' Sanders is booked. Seb is the definitive 'job jockey' and his positivity makes for confidence when backing SS mounts.
