FORT WORTH-Stephen Ames missed the cut at the Crowne Plaza Invitational in Texas yesterday when he shot a four-over 74 in the second round of the US$6.2 million tournament. Starting the day one-over following a 71 in Thursday's opening round at the Colonial Country Club, the T&T-born golfer continued to struggle with two bogeys, two double-bogeys and three birdies, to finish five-over 145. The cut has been set at even par. Play was stopped in the second round after a two and half-hour weather delay.
David Toms was alone in the lead at 12 under with seven holes left. He had a three-stroke lead over Steven Bowditch (64) and Charlie Wi (67), who finished their rounds yesterday before the delay that included heavy rain and thunder. When play was suspended, Toms had just teed off at the par-5 11th hole after saving par at No 10 with a two-putt from 65 feet. After 31s on both nines in his opening 62, Toms had a 31 again on the front side.
Toms lost in a playoff last week at The Players Championship. First-round co-leader Chez Reavie had two birdies, a bogey and a double bogey through eight holes yesterday.
