The Carib Brew­ery Ltd Day at the Races has at­tract­ed the high­est num­ber of en­tries for the year af­ter 144 hors­es were de­clared for the 11-race Ari­ma Race Club (ARC) hol­i­day card on Mon­day. The fea­ture event is the Carib Brew­ery Mid­sum­mer Clas­sic over 1,900 me­tres, a Grade One event with a purse of $450,000. Carib's spon­sor­ship and events man­ag­er Col­in Mur­ray not­ed it was the first time the brew­ery will spon­sor the pres­ti­gious event.

He said the com­pa­ny want­ed a race-day with a large and pres­ti­gious scope and more im­por­tant­ly on a pub­lic hol­i­day and as the Clas­sic is on Ar­rival Day, they de­cid­ed to spon­sor the day which will cost ap­prox­i­mate­ly $600,000. The Clas­sic will see a 12-horse field and is head­ed by the Glenn Mendez trained Touch D Road which won the NL­CB East­er Guineas, the first jew­el of lo­cal rac­ing's triple crown.

Mendez will be seek­ing his fourth win­ner in the event, hav­ing won with Car­ni­val Mes­si­ah, Top of The Class and Crown Point. Venezue­lan cham­pi­on jock­ey San­ti­a­go Gon­za­les will be aboard the Ju­nior Sam­my owned Touch D Road. Bar­ba­di­an Patrick Hus­bands has been booked for the John O'Brien trained Trea­sure Girl who fin­ished fifth be­hind Touch D Road in the Guineas. New pres­i­dent of the Ari­ma Race Club, Jus­tice Wen­dell Kan­ga­loo has promised that In­di­an Ar­rival Day will be a big day and the be­gin­ning of a rac­ing re­vival.
