Former netball executive Alden Lewis will be laid to rest tomorrow following a funeral service at the St Charles Roman Catholic Church in Tunapuna at 10 am, then to the Tunapuna cemetery. Lewis, who was 64 at the time of his sudden passing, died of Myocardial Infarction Hypertension (a heart attack caused by high blood pressure), at his home in Cantaro Village, Santa Cruz on Saturday night. Lewis was in his 12th term as treasurer of the Port-of-Spain Netball League (PoSNL), holding the same position in the T&T Netball Association (TTNA) for two straight terms, so this year, he could not stand for re-election in the same position.
Instead of walking away though, Lewis gladly accepted being named as a trustee to the league. Lewis was one of the founding members of Horizon Sports and Cultural Club (1995) which has teams that participate in a number of netball and basketball leagues. At the time of his death, he was the manager for teams in both sporting discipline. The Horizon club has seven netball teams from beginners to the top level and its basketball team, Courts Horizon, is the reigning national champion. Lewis was a former employee of Home Construction Limited (HCL) and in 1999, he received a long service (over 20 years) award before he retired.
During his lengthy stay at Home Construction, he got involved in cricket, specifically the HCL Trincity Cricket League where he was, up to his untimely death, the public relations officer (PRO). He is the second member from T&T's netball family to die this year. A little over a month ago, the netball fraternity bid farewell to national netballer Sonia Jack who died after a short battle with cancer. She was 34. Last year, T&T lost another "Calypso Girl", netball shooting star Lystra "Twinkle Toes" Zamore-Sheppard. He leaves to mourn his wife, international umpire Anne-Marie Dickson-Lewis and son Andrew.
