Malvern (women) and Queen's Park (men) recorded contrasting victories in their final matches to secure the runner-up positions when the T&T Hockey Board Big-Four tournament ended at the National Hockey Centre, Tacarigua, on Sunday. With Notre Dame securing the women's title for a second straight year after winning its first two matches, the battle was on for second spot and current Women's Championship Division leader Malvern took a ninth minute lead through US-based national forward Krizia Layne. However, within two minutes, the experienced national indoor forward Gayle-Ann Nieves drew the Magnolias level.
The match looked set to be headed for a draw until seven minutes before the final whistle another national standout, Oire Trotman, grabbed the winner for Malvern for its second win in three matches and second spot. In the earlier women's match, Belgium-based Blair Wynne scored a second consecutive hat-trick as the Glen "Fido" Francis-coached Dames blasted Paragon 6-2 to end with maximum nine points. The Dames, who qualified as the fourth best team on the league table, also crushed Malvern 8-3 and whipped Magnolias 5-3.
Like the Malvernites, Queen's Park had no choice but to try to keep hold of second spot after Defence Force, which is also coached by Francis, dethroned Petrotrin as men's Big-Four champions after a 3-1 victory in their meeting in the day's opening match. The match was all over by the halftime interval as Shawn Lee Quay, with goals in the ninth and 37th, along with Dominic Young, who scored in the 32nd minute, ensured the Parkites held a comfortable 3-0 lead.
Justin Clarke extended the advantage to 4-0 in the 57th while Paragon got a last-minute consolation from Christopher Scipio. With the win, the Parkites ended with six points, one behind Defence Force which got goals from Mickel Pierre, Kirth Davis and Aaron Mc Kenzie to cancel out Atiba Whittington's reply for the Oilmen.
