There are few concerts where, not one, but all of the artistes deliver performances of excellence and quality. Victor Churaman and Friends Concert, held at the Naparima Bowl, San Fernando, on June 11, was one such inspiring event. It seems as though the performers and their selections were hand-picked for the show, as they perfectly executed his theme, Love Is A Many Splendoured Thing. The three-hour concert saw a variety of gospel and other artistes, such as Joel John, Genevieve Assoon-Chinapoo, Neil Lalgee, Erickson Ramkhelawan, perform ten-minute sets, some backed by the six-member Churaman band and background singers.
The mixed audience of young and old celebrated the singers and musicians, who brought them to their feet, singing and clapping along to evergreen songs like Love Me Tender, When You Say You Love Me, I Believe I Can Fly, How Deep Is Your Love, and, of course, Love Is a Many Splendoured Thing, performed by the host. It was the first concert in seven years for Churaman, a school teacher at Grant Memorial Presbyterian Primary School. A gifted and self-taught vocalist and guitarist, playing since he was eight years old, Churaman said it was his dream and goal for the past seven years to promote a concert for artistes and musicians to perform their music and use their God-given talents without any limitations.
A member of the St Andrews Presbyterian Church, Princes Town, where he is the choir leader, Churaman said he always loved singing ballads and gospel music. As a result, he said, the theme came naturally as he always loved that song. Following the show, members of the audience had very positive comments about the show. "I was impressed." "We got our money's worth. It was really a professional concert." "All of the performers were top-of-the-line. It was indeed a splendid evening," were among the comments made.
