Maria Regina Grade School and Diamond Vale Government Primary walked away with the Group One boys and girls titles during the closing ceremony for the First Citizens National Primary Schools Mini Polo League at QRC on Sunday. Maria Regina won all three of its matches during the tournament, beating Bishop Anstey Junior School 10-1, Dunross Preparatory 16-5 and St Barb's Government Primary 4-3.
Diamond Vale also boasted a perfect record with victories over Dunross (15-1) and Bishop Anstey Junior School (9-7).
Two of Maria Regina's players (Rivaldo Prince and Jonathan Greenidge) were named on the seven-member Male All Star team while Diamond Vales' Shemiyah Dow-Ross, Zalika Moses and Rhea Russell earned spots on the corresponding female squad. Speaking at the ceremony, First Citizens' Corporate Manager, International Trade and Treasury, Dirk Smith encouraged the students to remember the values they had picked up during the tournament. "Each one of you has sacrificed your free time training and playing at these games. Sacrifice is the first step to becoming a winner...and today, you have all accomplished that...you are all winners," he said.
"While you had fun and made new friends, you also displayed a high level of dedication to this league. Let this approach continue to be your normal practice in life." The members of both All Star teams will attend, free of charge, a development training camp at Shoppes of Maraval Pool from July 18-29 and will also be given three-month scholarships with Royhil Seals Water Polo Club.
