Ryan Moore wont re­gain the jock­eys' cham­pi­onship this year. He sus­tained a bro­ken humerus and thumb in that ug­ly Glo­ri­ous Good­wood pile-up last Sat­ur­day. 27-year-old Moore crashed out in the four­teen fur­longs Toyo Tires Sum­mer Hand­i­cap, won by Petara Bay. Front-run­ning Pat Ed­dery-trained Cap­tain John Nixon broke down bad­ly around five fur­longs out and quick­ly fell back with Ver­dant and Ac­ti­vate be­ing brought down in a des­per­ate-look­ing melee. Sha­ya­reen was al­so ham­pered and vir­tu­al­ly pulled up. Jamie Spencer, on Ac­ti­vate, es­caped un­harmed but Moore lay strick­en on the turf for some time, be­fore be­ing loaded in­to an am­bu­lance. Ryan was tak­en to St Richard's Hos­pi­tal in Chich­ester for fur­ther treat­ment and it was lat­er re­port­ed he had sus­tained frac­tures.

Moore will see a sur­geon to con­firm ex­tent of his in­juries, but his train­er-fa­ther, Gary, reck­ons he'll be out for some time. "With shoul­der in­juries, it's nev­er that quick com­ing back and if it's as bad as I have heard it is, he won't get much change from the rest of the year," said Moore se­nior. Buick is sus­pend­ed to­day which means Salem Go­lam comes in for my nap se­lec­tion, Polper­ro in the Maid­en Stakes over ten fur­longs at Wind­sor; if he doesn't win this, with plen­ty in hand...! Carlisle stages an all-fe­male race-card this evening, first time ever but Hay­ley Turn­er has deigned not to go, which is a huge dis­ap­point­ment to the hard-work­ing ex­ec­u­tive of the Cum­bri­an course.
