Kristyan Valentine came back from a set down to upset top seed Denzil Clement in the boys Under-18 Singles final of the Eighth Annual TECU Junior Tennis Tournament at Petrotrin Tennis Club, Pointe-a-Pierre on Sunday. After conceding the first set 2-4, Valentine rallied back to win the next two 4-2, 4-2 to capture the title. Girls Under-18/16 number one Aryanne Hart was also made to work hard in her final, edging Danielle Devenish 4-2, 5-4 (4). The Hackshaw brothers, Ross and Scott, continued their winning ways by copping the boys Under-16 and Under-14 finals respectively. Ross beat Che Sanchez 5-4 (5), 4-0 while Scott whipped Timothy Davis without dropping a game. Celine Ramsumair lifted the girls Under-14 trophy after beating Carissa Rudolfo, Emma Davis secured the girls Under-12 title by trouncing Aura Whittier 4-0, 4-0 and Liu Chin defeated Che Andrews 4-2,1-4,4-1 for the boys Under-12 honours.
Aiden Carter won the boys Under-10 title while the novie events went to Francheska Dookeram (girls Under 10), Daniel Owen (boys Under 10), Anya King (girls Under 12), Patrick Honore (boys Under 14) and Anya King (girls Under 14). Over 100 of the country's top junior players took part in the tournament, which is the major annual junior tennis event in southern T&T. It was contested over three days after last Thursday's opening day was rained out. Rain also affected play on Friday and officials were forced to scrap the doubles events.
