The T&T Cadet boys team of Aaron Wilson and Arun Roopnarine won their second medal at the El Salvador Junior and Cadet Open, San Salvador, yesterday after losing out to Brazil in the doubles final. Winners of the bronze medal in the Cadet boys' team event on Friday, Wilson and Roopnarine went under to Brazilian rivals, Isaac Zauli and Gabriel Pereira 11–7, 9–11, 9–11, 5–11 in their gold medal encounter. The T&T had earlier defeated Panama's Calvin Shi and Jose Guerra 7–11, 11–8, 11–5, 11–9 in the quarterfinals before beating Swedish pair, Alfred Lindblad and Elisa Ranefur 11–4, 16–18, 5–11, 11–8, 11–2 in their semifinal. The T&T/Uruguay Cadet girls combination of Brittany Joseph and Maria-Pia Lorenzotti also missed out on another gold medal after losing to El Salvador "A" players Margarita Ortiz and Yancy Urias 9–11, 10–12, 3–11 in their doubles semifinal following a walkover quarterfinal victory.
In the Junior tournaments, the local pairs failed to get to the medal round. In the girls event, T&T's Catherine Spicer and Renuka Sitram was ousted by Sweden's Linda Bergstrom and Maria Engelson, 4–11, 2–11, 1–11 at the quarterfinal stage, while the T&T/Sweden combination of Andreus Pantin-Abraham and Hannes Iwarsson was beaten by Mexicans, Alejandro Garza and Daniel Perez 5–11, 8–11, 5–11 in the round-of-16. On Friday night, Joseph and Lorenzotti won their second consecutive team gold medal and third in two tournaments when defeated host El Salvador "A" 3–1 in the team final. Lorenzotti won the opener over Yanci Urias 11–8, 11–6, 11–9 but Ortiz drew her team when she overwhelmed Joseph, 10–12, 11–3, 11–6, 5–11, 11–9.
Joseph and Lorenzotti regained the lead after beating the El Salvadorean pair 4–11, 14–12, 11–7, 11–13, 11–-3 in the doubles before the Uruguay team sealed the deal with a come-from-behind 7–11, 11–6, 11–5, 11–5 victory over Ortiz in the reverse singles. However, the Cadet boys team of Aaron Wilson and Arun Roopnarine had to settle for bronze after a 3–1 semifinal loss to El Salvador. Earlier in the day, T&T boys blanked Costa Rica 3–0 in its quarterfinals with Wilson beating Gabriel Cascante 11–9, 11–6, 11–6, Roopnarine easing past Carlos Queseda 4–11, 11–8, 11–3, 11–6 while in the doubles, they won 11–8, 11–4, 11–7.
The singles tournament also served off with mixed results for the T&T players. Roopnarine beat Mexico's Luis Correa 11–4, 9–11, 11–4, 11–7, Carlos #Henriquez 11–3,11–3, 11–5 and Renee Quant 11–3, 10–12, 11–5, 11–6 to top his Cadet Group Five. Wilson tasted defeat, 11–5, 11–6, 4–11, 11–5 to Gabriel Pereira but whipped Carlos Linares 11–2, 11–1, 11–3 and Rodrigo Morales 11–2, 11–6, 11–6. Joseph was beaten in both her matches against Sweden's Annette Lundh and Emme Arias. In the juniors, Pantin-Abraham went under to Mexico's Alejandro Garza 6–11, 15–13, 4–11, 5–11, Wilson was edged out by Daniel Perez 6–11, 12–10, 9–11, 11–9, 10–12 and Roopnarine went under to Lindblad 8–11, 11–9, 8–11, 7–11.
