The Movement for Change group of cricket supporters have postponed their mass meeting which was slated for last night at the Preysal High School in Preysal, Couva. Foundation member of the Movement For Change Patrick Rampersad said yesterday that the postponement of the meeting was caused by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar's declaration of a limited state of emergency in crime hotspots throughout Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday.
The Movement For Change Meeting was called after Minister of Sports Anil Roberts lashed out at the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board late last week and publicly called on its president Azim Bassarath to step down after top cricketers Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard announced that they would not be playing for the national team but for their respective Indian franchises in the upcoming Nokia Champions League T20 in India. Rampersad said after consultation with his fellow Movement For Change officials it was decided to postpone the meeting to a date to be determined preferably when the regulations of the state of emergency are relaxed.
"The announcement by the Prime Minister and the measures taken had the potential of affecting the turnout expected for the meeting and we are hoping for the widest possible participation. So we thought it wise to put it off until the situation improves," said Rampersad. Bassarath, who bore the brunt of the minister's attack not only on the Bravo/Pollard issue but for the Board's recent approval of a restructuring of the National League, was expected to deliver a response to the serious charges levelled at him and his administration.
