T&T's Rondell Sorillo finished seventh in the Men's 200m finals on the penultimate day of action at the 13th IAAF World Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Daegu Stadium, Daegu, South Korea yesterday. Sorillo started in lane one after he did not secure one of the automatic top two spots in Friday's semifinals. The three-time national champion crossed the line in 20.34 seconds, his fastest in the championships. But the Nike pro was left in the shadows of world record holder Usain Bolt, who sped to an amazing 19.40 second time to take the gold. The time was the fourth fastest ever run, behind Bolt's 19.19 and 19.30 and Michael Johnson's 19.32. Bolt's win was his first of the meet after his surprise false-start disqualification in the 100m dash one week ago. American Champion Walter Dix was second in 19.70 with European champion Christophe Lemaitre of France taking the bronze in a French record of 19.80. Norway's Jaysuma Saida Ndure (19.95), Nickel Ashmeade of Jamaica (20.29) and Brazilian Bruno de Barrios (20.31) all got to the line ahead of Sorillo.
2009 World Championships runner up Alonso Edwards of Panama did not finish the race. Speaking after race, Sorillo said he was satisfied on making his first global final appearance. "I feel pretty good. I was disappointed to come out without a medal but at the same time, I have accomplished a lot in this championship." The La Brea runner also said despite competing against the world's best runners, he was not distracted. "I was thinking about running and nothing else... anything else would have been a distraction." The 25-year-old improved on his semifinal placing at the last World Championships in Berlin, Germany, two years ago where he was sixth in 20.63. Sorillo and Women's 100m bronze medallist Kelly-Ann Baptiste are the only local athletes to place in the top eight so far in the championships.
