W Connection came from behind to edge St Ann's Rangers 2-1 in their Digicel T&T Pro League 2011/2012 season opener ar the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva on Saturday. Rangers took a surprised lead in the 17th minute when one of its off-season signings, midfielder Mikhail Awai, struck a powerful right footer from distance past goalkeeper Aquelius Sylvester following some neat build up by Kaashif Thomas. Despite falling behind, W Connection, coming off a trophy less campaign last year, enjoyed the better of the early exchanges and was denied getting on even terms in the 32nd minute when Rangers' Jamaican custodian Shane Mattis tipped over an effort from former San Juan Jabloteh striker, 19 year-old Jerrel Britto.
Two minutes later Britto was at the centre of his team's attack once more as he headed overbar from a Hughton Hector centre while in the 40th minute he wasted another chance after he failed to beat Mattis from a one-on-one position inside the six-yard box. Britto, a national youth team striker, finally opened his account for W Connection three minutes before the break when he climbed perfectly at far post to head home a Kerron Cummings right sided corner to send both teams level at the half. Six minutes after the restart, W Connection with new captain Hector conducting things in midfield created another opening but this time it was another teenager Shahdon Winchester who blasted high over the goal. Hector himself had a decent effort which went just wide two minutes later, before defender Joevin Jones, got the winner in the 72nd minute.
With the win, W Connection joins league debutants, T&TEC at the top of the table with three points each after the latter had a similar 2-1 win over DirecTV North East Stars at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya on Friday night.
