Per­fect Cir­cle, un­der a force­ful ride by Jalon Samuel, yes­ter­day won the fea­ture 1,600 me­tres turf event for Three-Year-Olds and Over Hors­es Rat­ed 90 and over, at San­ta Rosa Park, Ari­ma. In a thrilling fin­ish, Samuel was able to get his mount to re­gain the lead where it mat­tered most, at the line. The Glenn Mendez-trained horse was al­ways at the front end of the event as he hunt­ed down ear­ly leader Back on Top. Go­ing down the back stretch Samuel put the Mr To­co­man-owned horse in­to the lead as Back on Top dropped out, while favourite, First To Fly and Strikes Not Spares came to join the leader. At the far turn, First To Fly lead but on­ly just, as Per­fect Cir­cle pressed the pace with Strikes Not Spares chal­leng­ing. The John O'Brien-trained Rag­ing Ha­lo be­gan to close on the lead­ers, with Black­stone Street a long way back.

How­ev­er, com­ing to the cor­ner, In­de­pen­dence Cup win­ner First To Fly came un­der pres­sure and re­lin­quished the lead to Per­fect Cir­cle, as Rag­ing Ha­lo got a big "let in" on the rail. Rag­ing Ha­lo looked the like­ly win­ner with 200 me­tres left, as he held a three-quater length ad­van­tage but Samuel would not give in and kin­dled an­oth­er ef­fort from the son of To­ry Hole/Sur­prise News for a fi­nal run to the fin­ish. To his cred­it, Per­fect Cir­cle bat­tled on game­ly to put his head in front of Rag­ing Ha­lo at the line. First To Fly stayed on at one-pace to be third with Strikes Not Spares fourth. Per­fect Cir­cle record­ed the time of 1:37.2 for the trip.

Rid­ing ho­n­ours for the day were shared be­tween to Jalon Samuel and Bar­ba­di­an ap­pren­tice, An­to­nio Perch who each rode two win­ners. The lead­ing own­er was Mr To­co­man who was in the win­ner's en­clo­sure for the first two events. Look­ing At Love­ly and Per­fect Cricle are both owned by Mr To­co­man. Rac­ing con­tin­ues next Sat­ur­day at San­ta Rosa Park.
