W Connection defender Mekeil Williams is the lone uncapped player named in an 18-man squad by Soca Warriors coach, Otto Pfister for this country's next two 2014 CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers away to Bermuda on Friday and Barbados on October 11 at home. Williams, a former member of the National Under-20 team that played at the 2009 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Egypt is also one of eight players in the team that will be playing under the German-born coach for the first time. With skipper Kenwyne Jones of Stoke City and strike partner Darryl Roberts both out because of injury, Pfister has included Orlando City duo Devorn Jorsling and Kevin Molino.
The others who will have their first chance to impress under Pfister's watch are Belgium-based defender Radanfah Abu Bakr, Kendall Jagdeosingh of Rochester Rhinos, Puerto Rico Islanders' Osei Telesford,
DirecTV North East Stars' Kevaughn Connell and W Connection goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams, back in the fray after a short spell in Belgium at Olympic Chaleroi. Overall there are 11 overseas-based players in the squad which leaves for a camp in Fort Lauderdale. They include Slovakian-based winger Lester Peltier, Belgium-based midfielder Khaleem Hyland, US-based trio Keon Daniel, Chris Birchall (LA Galaxy), Columbus Crew defender Julius James and Clyde Leon of Colombian club, Itagui Ditaires
Also out of the matches are the experienced of World Cup veterans, Carlos Edwards due to a family emergency and Anthony Wolfe, who sustained an injury during action for North East Stars. Densill Theobald (Dempo FC/India), Andre Boucaud (York City/England), Jake Thomson (Exeter City/England), Andre Toussaint (Joe Public), Carlyle Mitchell (Vancouver Whitecaps/USA) and goalkeeper Anthony Warner (Wellington Phoenix/New Zealand), selected for the first two qualifiers, have also been overlooked. With regards to the squad selected, Pfister said, "It's a good group. There are players here with good quality."
"We have two games again to play within a week and just like we did with first two matches and our aim will be to win both matches so that we can move to a maximum twelve points from our four matches. Okay, maybe we have a one or two players missing because of injury but this is football and we will find a way to go forward from here," Pfister said.
CA fly Warriors direct to Bermuda
Caribbean Airlines, who recently signed on as a partner with the TTFF to support the Soca Warriors for the 2014 World Cup campaign, followed through on their pledge, by accommodating the team's request for an arranged trip to and from Bermuda. Caribbean Airlines will fly the team directly to Bermuda on Sunday and then back to Port-of-Spain on Saturday which means the team will avoid longer hours, not having to stop off in the United States en route to Hamilton.
