Digicel Pro League

Strike duo, Willis Plaza and Hector Sam were both on target as Adam’s Construction San Juan Jabloteh picked up its first Digicel T&T Pro League win of the season, 2-0 over previously unbeaten leader W Connection on Tuesday night. This was in a re-scheduled round one match day three meeting at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.  With the win, Jabloteh, unbeaten in four matches improved to six points, three behind W Connection while debutants  T&TEC FC is second with seven points.

But it wasn’t all Jabloteh in the contest which was loaded with constructive football on both sides. However, in the end it was the Earl “Spiderman” Carter coached Jabloteh which  capitalised on its chances to end the “Savonetta Boys” three-match league winning streak. After a cautious start by both teams, Plaza scored his seventh goal in all competitions this season when he fired past goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams from inside the area in the tenth minute following a quick play from a free-kick he won earlier.

W Connection almost responded within two minutes but was denied by Jabloteh goalkeeper Cleon John who made two saves, the second of which was a superb push behind to deny an Andre Quashie’s blast. Four minutes later, former Jabloteh striker, 19-year-old Jerrel Britto fired wide of John’s far post and with the half coming to a close he also saw a goalward effort deflected away for a corner. Jabloteh, boosted by the return of defensive duo, Sheldon Bateau and Joel Leslie Russell from national Under-23 team duties at the Pan American Games in Mexico was quick out of the blocks and should have doubled its lead in the 47th minute via Johan Peltier.

However, after being put through one-on-one of goalkeeper Williams by Plaza, Peltier saw his effort stopped at point-blank range. Both teams were not afraid to throw numbers forward in attack and seconds later, W Connection’s Kerron “Ball Pest” Cummings tested John while Hector was inches wide of the target from a 51st minute free-kick won by substitute Shahdon Winchester, one of five W Connection who also returned from national duty in Mexico on Saturday. At the other end of the pitch, Jabloteh was also inches from adding to its lead when wingback Nigel Daniel curled a free-kick just over the crossbar.

Hector then came closest to drawing W Connection level in the 73rd minute when he connected with a pass from 17-year-old midfielder Jomal Williams and unleashed a curling right footed effort which ricochet off the base of the right post. It would be a chance that would come back to haunt W Connection as six minutes later, Sam, who headed wide from a set piece in the 62nd minute, made no mistake this time around, eluding two defenders and hammering his shot past Williams for a 2-0 lead after being  picked out by the speedy Kennedy Hinkson.

Within the final eight minutes, the former England-based Sam twice came close to extending the margin of victory, but in the end the two goals were enough for Jabloteh to pick up a first win after three league draws, while ending W Connection’s perfect start. League matches resume tomorrow with a double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium,Mucurapo from 5 pm. In the opener, W Connection faces T&TEC in a top-of-the-table clash while two hours later, third placed Jabloteh meets cellar-placed Caledonia AIA.
