Tariq Marcano (Fatima College) and Brianna Govia (Holyn Name Convent) played key roles in helping their respective teams to the title when the National Secondary Schools Indoor Hockey (Under-20) Tournament took place at the Woodbrook Youth Centre, Hamilton-Holder, Woodbrook, on Wednesday. Marcano, who was overlooked for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award won by Trinity College's Shaquille Edwards scored two of his team's three goals in the three-team round-robin final against last year's winner Queen's Royal College and Trinity. First, Marcano netted for Fatima in a 1-1 draw with Trinity which got its item via Edwards. The nippy Marcano then scored again in his team's 2-1 triumph over QRC, a virtual decider to dethrone the Royalians as champ. Jordan Vieira added the other goal for Fatima while Jordan Reynos got QRC's reply. Fatima ended the three-team series with four points, one ahead of the Royalians while Trinity was winless.
Earlier on, QRC (Zone B), Trinity (Zone A) and Fatima (Zone C) all won their round-robin groups to reach the three-team final. Just like, Marcano, Govia was surprisingly side-stepped for the "MVP' award which was captured by South East Port-of-Spain's Zene Henry. However, she had the last laugh as she led Holy Name past St Joseph Convent (PoS) 3-0 scoring all the goals and then, 3-2 over Providence Girl's, scoring twice to end as joint top scorer with Tamara De Nobriga, with eight each while her team tallied maximum six points.
Emerald Piper added the other goal against Providence, which got its items from Dana-Lee De Gannes and Aime Olton. In the first phase of the competition, Holy Name (Zone A), Providence (Zone B) and St Joseph Convent (PoS) all won their round-robin groups.
