Bad news for Marciales as Brown by TKO

American-based Lisa “Bad News” Brown marked her return to T&T with a fourth round TKO victory over Colombia’s Angela Marciales for the WIBA Super Bantamweight title at the Queen’s Park Oval in St Clair on Saturday night. Brown, 40, came out as the aggressor, but remained watchful during the first round. Marciales was no push over though and the honours were even as they got back to their corners.
“Bad News” began the second with intentions of ending the fight early, keeping the Colombian uncomfortable with a collection of uppercuts, jabs and hooks. Physically imposing and swift, the local continued to outclass her 19-year-old opponent, who at one stage lost her balance after missing a right hook and fell to the ground.
Although Marciales showed good spirit, the referee ended the fight in the fourth round, deciding that she had taken enough punishment by that point. Brown, who took her record to 19-5-3 with the win, said she felt in control throughout the match. “I was mentally and physically ready and I did what I came here to do, which was to be victorious and win back the WIBA title and be a world champion again. The first round was just about figuring out what she had to bring. Then when I realise what she had, I started to dictate the pace.”
She added that she next hoped to face Panama’s Chantall Martinez for the WBA Super Bantamweight title. “I went there and fought her in April and the judges beat me and we’re hoping that we can get a rematch in T&T in front of my people.” In other results, locals Kirt Sinnette and Kerston Manswell each recorded swift TKO victories against their Guyanese opponents. Sinnette roughed up James Walcott before the fight was stopped in the second round while Manswell took less than two minutes to defeat Leon Gilkes, who fell to his knees in pain after receiving blows to the midsection.
Sinnette said that Walcott had posed no problems. “I don’t know if he came to fight. To me, he did not give a good performance so I just did what I had to do and took him out. It was no challenge.”
