Defending champions Fatima College eased past Queen's Royal College 17-0 to capture the Digicel's Schools Rugby under-17 division title on Saturday.QRC, led by captain Xavier Henry, captured the under-14's title with a 12-7 win over St Anthony's College, in the final. Henry scored the second try in the win, which went unconverted. Quasi Phillip opened the scoring early on, and his try was converted by Wasim Ollivierre.Henry was also a starter on the QRC team which fell out to Fatima in the Under-17 final.
The two divisions played in the "touch" format throughout the season, typical of current Schools' practice.Fatima's under-17s never looked likely to concede in Sunday's final. Apart from almost allowing free space to QRC's Elichi Todd, who was one of the tallest and fastest players on the park, Fatima held an impressive solid line. William Edghill, Deion Smith and Darnel Roper scored one try each. Hasani Rodney converted Smith's try. Both the successful under-14 and under-17 teams were awarded by Digicel with trophies and medals, while the other finals were being played.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, Harvard "old-boy" Brian Lewis, who helped put together the event, said it was a success despite the club's rugby section being turned down when seeking Corporate sponsorship. "We tried something different this year and despite the lack of sponsors and the heavy showers, the event went very well. The Novices and Under-15 divisions did not kick off but that was because most of the younger guys decided to play with the under-17s."
He continued on saying, "Changes will be made to ensure next year will be even better."Harvard Rugby Section Chairman Anthony Loregnard, also said that he was pleased with the outcome of the tournament. He, along with Lewis also extended congratulations to Rainbow which was successful in the under-10, under-12 and the under-17 (contact) divisions.Following the final match between Harvard and Northern, the club hosted the awards function, where the MVPs and the respective winning teams received their trophies.
The event which began back in 1988 was then hosted by the Falcons Rugby Club and was branded, the "Red Stripe Classic." Harvard took over the event when Falcons and Guevaras Rugby Club merged in 1998.
