Harvard Club defeated last year's champion Stag Trinidad Northern in the Men's Open division final of the new-look Harvard 7s Rugby Festival 2011, at St Mary's Ground, Serpetine Road, on Sunday afternoon. Some 23 teams participated.Harvard also won the Boys' Under-19 division, while Rainbow had an excellent outing in the youth divisions taking three titles in the new Under-10, Under-12 (both non-contact) division as well as the Under-17s (contact), over the course of the two-day tournament.
Royalians took the women's crown after an exceptional final against Aranguez Romans. The International School of Port of Spain (ISPS) took the Under-17 division (non-contact) trophy, while Police and Defence Force copped the Over-35 "rugby reunion" and the Men's Plate, respectively. The Digicel Schools Rugby League also had the Under-14 and Under-17 final played on Saturday and Sunday, with QRC and Fatima taking the respective crowns.
The Under-14 was won by Queen's Royal College (QRC), following a 12-7 win over St Anthony's College, before Fatima College took the Under-17 title a day later, crushing QRC 17-0.Harvard crushed Stag Trinidad Northern 40-10 in the final match. The match was contested over two seven minute intervals, as was the format for all of the matches, except for the school finals.
Harvard was the quicker team and was in its opponents' half for the majority of the match. Claudius Butts scored two tries and was directly involved in several others, which saw him earn the "Most Valuable Player" award for his efforts. In the Women's final, Royalians scored five unconverted tries to ease past Romans. The scoreline, however, barely reflected the quality of play from both sides. The electric affair, saw Royalians have the edge, but the Romans played considerably well, as they were out of action for the majority of the season.
For an outstanding effort, national player Dalia Jordan-Brown Brown was awarded the Women's division MVP.Royalians also copped the under-17 Girls Division title, with Rachel McKenzie taking the MVP award.
