Annie Alexander copped her second gold in the last week on the US Indoor circuit when she captured the Auburn Invitational women's shot put title in Birmingham, Alabama on the weekend. The two-time World Junior finalist topped the field with a third round effort of 17.70m. The distance is a new school record and personal best for the University. She improved on her 16.08 effort in taking the Kentucky Invitational last on January 14. Compatriot and Georgia University student Hilenn James was third (15.33). Chandra Brewer separated the T&T throwers taking second with 16.34m. Alexander was also 17th in the women's weight throw (15.51). Kyron Blaise was also victorious in the men's triple jump. The LSU student leaped out to 15.49m. Olympic and World relay silver medallist Marc Burns was one of three local athletes who just missed out on top three finishes. Burns was fourth in the men's 60m finals in 6.64. Three triple World Junior medallist were just inside the World Indoor qualifying time of 6.67. The 2012 World Indoor Championships are carded for Istanbul, Turkey on March 9-11.
Taking the gold in the event was Harry Adams (Auburn) 6.55 with the Cayman Islands' Kemar Hyman (Florida State) in second (6.56) and American D'Angelo Cherry (Mississippi State) 6.63. In the heats Burns was third in 6.68 with Tennessee's Jamol James 16th (6.83). James was also 17th in the men's 200m finals (22.33). Kai Selvon and Aleesha Barber also came away medal-less in their events. Selvon was fourth in the women's 60m finals but set personal best of 7.30. She improved her 7.38 she clocked in the heats earlier in the day and also in finishing second at the inaugural Crimson Tide Open on January 14. The time is quicker than the 7.35 World Indoor Standard. Nigerian International Gloria Asumnu stuck gold in 7.19 with the Octavious Freeman (UCF) 7.23 and Dezerea Bryant of Clemson in third (7.25). Sevlon was again luck-less fourth in the 200m clocking 23.66. Aleesha Barber was 28th in the 60m heats (7.78). In the 60m hurdles finals the national outdoor sprint hurdles record holder was fourth in 8.25, just outside of the World Indoor qualifying requirement of 8.18. American Kristi Castlin took the victory in a world leading 7.94. In the first round Barber was in 8.27. Daniel Davis (Auburn) was 21st in the heats (8.96) and was 13th in the long jump finals (5.58)
Emmanuel Mayers (Mississippi State) was seventh in the men's 400m finals (48.79). The former national junior 400m hurdles record holder returned to help his school to victory in the 4x 400m finals in 3:11:81. At the Texas Tech Indoor Open No 2 in Lubbock, Texas, Janiel Bellille turned the tables on her compatriot and South Plains College school mate Sparkle McKnight to win the women's 600m yards. Bellille crossed the line in 1:22:08 with McKnight behind (1:22:70). At the first Open Mc Knight was the champion ahead of Bellille. The two then combined South Plains to second in the women's 4 X 400m relay in 3:43:10. Karla Hope was part of Abilene Christian's silver medal Distance medley team which clocked 12:27:06. Dellon Williams (Texas Tech) was fourth in the men's long jump (7.23) while. At the LSU/Texas A&M Dual meet at the Mc Ferrin Athletic Centre, College Station, Texas Wayne Davis ll was second in the men's 60m finals in 7.93 seconds. Ade Alleyne-Forte (LSU )was fifth in the men's 400m (47.71). Another LSU sprinter Shermund Allsop was sixth in the 200 (21.98). The 2010 World Junior 4x100m relay bronze medallist was also 11th in the 60m finals (6.80). Deon Lendore was part of Texas A&M's successful 4X400m team clocking 3:07:52. Alleyne-Forte and his LSU team-mates were disqualified.
