Kelvin Jones, former national player and coach of Digicel T&T Pro League's Police says his team's 1-1 draw against table-leader, Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA on Tuesday at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar was a confidence booster. Overlooked T&T utility player Noel Williams jumped off the bench as an early substitution made by Jones and leveled the scores 1-1 in the 45th minute after Caledonia's Ataullah Guerra had the Morvant/Laventille side in front by the 35th minute. Speaking after the match, Jones was quite satisfied with the result saying, "They (Caledonia) are more or less ahead of us in the title chase and we are quite pleased to come and pull off a draw against them. We are here to compete and give it our best shot at the title although starting the season very late."
This season Jones is equipped with a very talented bunch with the likes of Trent Noel, Kareem Young and Todd Ryan and young standout Vernell Ramirez. "We have the Trent Noel and Kareem Young as the experienced guys together with the younger talents because we are very focused on preparing teams for the future," explained the Police coach. Williams added, "Since I came back into the team two matches ago because of injury, I find that we are performing really well." "I scored the equaliser and I feel good about, but I feel we should have won the game.
Police isn't an underdog team again and (other teams) have to watch out," he added. It was the second meeting of the two teams, with Caledonia humbling the lawmen 3-1 earlier this month after the Jones coached side stunned T&TEC FC 4-1 back in December. Shabazz: We lack self belief
Despite his team going top of the table with the 1-1 draw against Police on Tuesday, Jamal Shabazz, coach of Caledonia said his players didn't have the self belief to win the match. He added, "We were creating the chances, but players preferred to pass rather than go for goal and we have to work on rectifying this lack of self belief." "It was a hard game. They(Police) played well and we were without five key players (Jamal Gay, Trevin Caesar, Aquil Selby, Micah Lewis and goalkeeper Zane Coker all with the T&T Under-23s) and in these circumstances we are happy to get a point." Goalscorer Guerra believed that his side should have bagged full points saying, "I feel disappointed because we played the better football. We're not supposed to drop points against teams like these. I should have delivered a little more," added the former San Juan Jabloteh player. Caledonia jumped to the top of the standings with 19 points, just a point ahead of T&TEC, Adam's Construction San Juan Jabloteh and W Connection.
