A historical challenge for our football

Angus Eve

For those who are still interested in the development of our Football, can I humbly suggest that we keep an eye on our Olympic team for the next two months. I address this tournament because, recently, Angus Eve led his squad of talented youngsters to a victory over the national Team of Finland, This happened days after the Finns won a close encounter against our National senior team. It is unwise to ignore these results at this time. The future of our game lies in this group of players and instead of aiming attention to the past, where all sorts of consistent criticism are flashing out of the mouths of many, it seems more constructive to focus on what can be a possible entry into Olympic Football Competition during the month of July in London. The recent problems which appeared to have brought a new platform for the development of the game will not be quickly corrected in short time, but the game must go on.

Some folks believe that talking about change on a regular and monotonous basis will provide an answer, but that is not the way. Every national association is guided by the clubs that are registered through the zonal associations, whose directives are handed down to the executive of the TTFF. The art of change lies within the system, so the custodian of change lies with the clubs and by extent, the players registered with these clubs. Sports administration is not something which can easily be handled by persons without the relevant knowledge and experience, so if there are those who believe that they can do better, they can try to convince the clubs that they can offer a better path of Football.

During that time, attention is drawn away from the preparation the U23 team which is just four matches away from an inaugural entry into an Olympic Games tournament. Like most other third world countries, our attention span is solely on our National senior team, without realising that a good national team grows from the dedication by the coaching staff whose preparation of the early years of our youth programs will eventually blossom the players into formidable and well- disciplined footballers. So is it too difficult to give some time and encouragement to a group which I consider to be one of the more talented bunch of players for some time. Over the past few weeks, we have read where two of our key players from the U-23 squad have been sent to other countries by their clubs to ply their trade.
