Williams takes double Gold at Orlando tournament

Teenager Amy Williams fought her way to gold medallists in two events at the Bassai Karate Dojo International Inter-dojo and Invitational Tournament on January 28 at Pine Hills Performing Arts Center in Orlando, Florida.
The 15-year-old karate took the girls black belt kata and kobudo titles in her first competition for the year. She first performed Jiin (merciful promise) kata but tied with Kaley Bansrupan. However in the tie-breaker round, Williams performed Rohai snatching victory from her foe. She placed second at the Orlando Anti-Drug tournament last November with the kata Rohai also. Her weapon kata was Rubae No Kon, a very old Okinawan weapon kata with the Bo (staff).

This event was sanctioned by the USSSA Karate Programme and had the blessings of the World Untied Karate Organization (WUKO). It was also a qualifying event for team selection for athletes who wish to represent T&T, Guyana and Grenada at the WUKO-Caribbean Cup which will take place in Port of Spain in September. Williams is now closer to be selected for the T&T team. She will now be gearing up for next qualifier: the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) Karate Championships on April 28.
