Teddy McCook identified generating new streams of revenue as his major task for the coming year. The president track & field in the North American, Central American and Caribbean area said his organisation was looking to increase the budget to help more athletes, particularly serious medal hopefuls for the 2012 Olympic Games. “We have our budget for the regular competitions which are mainly for the junior athletes,” said McCook in an interview with the Track Alerts Website.

“We are hoping for additional sponsorship to assist countries who have athletes who have potential to medal to ensure they get an opportunity in meets whether in or outside the region.” He said: “I spoke with Lord Sebastien Coe (chairman of London 2012 Olympic Games) when he was in Kingston to see if we could get some funding towards that and he said he will look at it. “What we have to look at now are the athletes from the various territories who we think will make an impression at (the Olympics). I think many of the territories do have such athletes.”

McCook said he was pleased that there was greater interest in the field events, particularly by athletes from the Caribbean region, where the track events have attracted greater interest. “You can have only so many persons in the 100 and 200 metres and hurdles, the events that we tend to do very well in,” he said. “Many athletes are realising that if they want to wear national colours in other events. “If you look at what we are doing at throwing events you would notice that our athletes are coming at the World level effectively. “Look at the recent World Junior and World Youth championships, we are right up there. This is a new thrust and we hope to widen our possibilities. Our coaches are getting more and more familiarised with the events.”
