Mitchell wins Gasparee swim

Top long distance swimmer Nicholas Mitchell edged Sachim Sankar by five hundredths of a second to emerge as the overall champion of the eighth Around Gasparee Island Swim on Saturday. Seventeen-year-old Mitchell, a member of Stingray Swim club, completed the 5.6km swim in 1:22:11 ahead a field of 53 swimmers in this year’s Kia sponsored event. Mitchell, winner of the 2650m Amateur Swimming Association of T&T (ASATT) Maracas Open Water Classic in September, overtook 15-year-old, Sankar of the Petrotrin Swim Club, 100 meters before the finish line on the Gaspar Grande beach. Sixteen-year-old paralympic swimmer, Shantol Ince, was the first girl to complete the course in a time of 1:29:03 and placed sixth overall. The swimmers went around Gasparee island in a clockwise direction starting on the east side of the Island and finishing on the beach at Gaspar Grande.
