Top long dis­tance swim­mer Nicholas Mitchell edged Sachim Sankar by five hun­dredths of a sec­ond to emerge as the over­all cham­pi­on of the eighth Around Gas­pa­ree Is­land Swim on Sat­ur­day. Sev­en­teen-year-old Mitchell, a mem­ber of Stingray Swim club, com­plet­ed the 5.6km swim in 1:22:11 ahead a field of 53 swim­mers in this year's Kia spon­sored event. Mitchell, win­ner of the 2650m Am­a­teur Swim­ming As­so­ci­a­tion of T&T (ASATT) Mara­cas Open Wa­ter Clas­sic in Sep­tem­ber, over­took 15-year-old, Sankar of the Petrotrin Swim Club, 100 me­ters be­fore the fin­ish line on the Gas­par Grande beach. Six­teen-year-old par­a­lympic swim­mer, Shan­tol Ince, was the first girl to com­plete the course in a time of 1:29:03 and placed sixth over­all. The swim­mers went around Gas­pa­ree is­land in a clock­wise di­rec­tion start­ing on the east side of the Is­land and fin­ish­ing on the beach at Gas­par Grande.
