Top American race-horse trainer Dale Romans will be the feature speaker at the Jetsam Awards which will be held at the Casablanca Ballroom, Movietown on February 29. A two-time leading trainer at Keeneland, Romans has won two Stakes races there while adding four at Churchill Downs, one at Pimlico, and three at Hoosier Park. In 2001, he won Stakes races at six different tracks, making him one of the most versatile and successful trainers practicing today. He won the Keeneland fall meet title last year for the second consecutive year, notching eight wins and total earnings of $306,639. Romans has won 51 races at Keeneland, nearly 25 per cent of his total starts.
The Jetsam Awards ceremony was launched yesterday at the Queen's Park Oval and all eyes will be on the Tres Amigos owned roan horse Bruceontheloose which will be attempting to win the horse of the year title for the third time.The five-year-old is one of two horses to have won the title twice with the other being the legendary Sugar Mike in 2003/04. He will be challenged by his Gold Cup conqueror Boogie Blues and the Glenn Mendez trained Signal Alert. The Jetsam Awards are named after the famous creole racehorse and sire of the 1940s. He was sired by Flotsam, winner of the English 2000 Guineas out of Hope-in-the-Valley, bred by Mikey Amoroso-Centeno and partners, owned by Centeno and Boysie Harris and trained by Centeno.
