Just a question of Al Freej going down and coming back for the Maiden Stakes over five furlongs of Wolverhampton polytrack today, or is it? After opposing 1/8 loser Derivatives successfully at Southwell, Tuesday, I’m more convinced than ever that value lies with the unexpected, which is why Superplex is nominated as an each-way ‘special,’ with two places on offer. Others have little or no chance whatsoever, according to the dynamic time-handicap.
Superplex is consistent, has plenty of experience and is a dead-set sprinter. Al Freej seems a more classy type but will be racing over the minimum trip for the first time and yet shapes as if further will suit Roger Varian’s charge moreso. Probability, for the majority, is that Al Freej will indeed outclass his rivals but there isn’t sufficient difference to resist taking another chance. Whether or not your local bookie will facilitate each-way betting, with only five runners is uncertain but those who play ‘on-line’ won’t encounter such problems, bookmakers are fighting for your dollar.
Although handicaps are taboo in my book, smallish fields offer opportunities and course and distance winner Knowe Head should be able to make the frame against ten rivals in the ‘aged’ handicap over ten furlongs.
Knowe Head, mount of championship-chasing Alan Kirby, has one serious rival, Trip Switch, and again each-way is recommended; that’s also the case with similar optimism for Downhill Skier, one of ten ‘decs’ for the ‘aged’ handicap over seven furlongs. Downhill Skier appeals strongly because he’s clear ‘best-in’ on the TH and is trained by Mark Brisbourne whose yard has really come in form the cold this last week or so. In addition stable-apprentice Jack Duern claims 7lbs allowance! Finally Crowning Star shouldn’t be pressed to give AWR ‘champ’ Luke Morris another winner in the five-runner Claiming Stakes over a mile.
