Reigning double Olympic silver medallist Richard Thompson will open his 2012 season at the US Track and Field Classic in Fayetteville, Arkansas (USA) when he lines up in the men’s 60m on Saturday. The race will be the first race for the 26-year-old since his move to Handling Speed Intelligently (HSI) late last year. Thompson parted ways with his college coach Dennis Sharver at the end of 2011. Thompson’s run on Saturday will be the first outing under new coach John Smith. According to his manager, Emmanuel Hudson, the former Queen’s Royal College student will go into the event looking at assessing form since working under Smith.  “It is the first stage of the rebuilding process and the focus will be on technique so as we are not expecting anything else.”

T&T’s quadruple Olympic medallist Ato Boldon was tutored by Smith who guided him to the 2007 World 200m and 1998 Commonwealth 100m titles. Current American world champions Carmelita Jeter (women’s 100) and Jason Richardson (men’s 110m hurdles) are also coached by the American coach. Several local athletes are also under HSI management. Reigning World Junior men’s 400m hurdles champion Jehue Gordon, 2006 World Junior women’s long jump gold medallist Rhonda Watkins, reigning Pan American men’s 100m bronze medalist Emmanuel Callender and 2011 CAC Championships 1500m bronze medallist Pilar McShine all run under the California based organisation. Two-time World Indoor finalist, Cleopatra Borel, will also open her season in Fayetteville. Borel will compete in the women’s shot put while sprinter Semoy Hackett will do battle in the women’s 60m.
