Chaguanas Borough Corporation councilor Danan Singh, right, presents the Naz Yacoob Trophy to Kimraj Roodal of Ragoonan Road Sports Club who collected on behalf of batsman Marcus Daniel at the Caroni Cricket Association annual prize giving function on Saturday night at Presentation College.

Former T&T Guardian cricket reporter Naz Yacoob was remembered at the annual awards function of the Caroni Cricket Association at Presentation College on Saturday. A trophy in Yacoob’s name was presented to Marcus Daniel, the talented Ragoonanan Road batsman who was the top run-getter in the Bert’s Sports Under-19 competition. Taking “Club of the Year” honour was Palmiste who won the Bert’s Saturday Limited Overs; and were runners-up in the Fine Choice/WGM Meats Sunday Limited Overs and the Rovindra Ramdial and DS Catering T20.

Palmiste was also semi-finalist in the Midweek Limited Overs competition. Back Street emerged champions of the Warnerville Grain Mills Premiership while Sheffield were runners-up and Paradise took third spot. Ragoonanan Road also claimed their share of prizes on the night copping the Midweek Limited Overs; the Bert Sports Under-19 title; and the Fine Choice/WGM Meats Sunday Limited Overs. They were also runners-up in the Voom Voom Super Six and semi-finalists in the WGM Under-17 tournament.

Also in the spotlight was Presentation College spinner Emilio Gopaul who took home the Churchill Bissoon Trophy for outstanding performances in the Bert’s Sports Under-15 and Under-17 tournaments claiming most wickets for Invincibles. Both the Yacoob and Bissoon trophies were sponsored by Deonarine Deyal Tent Rentals. The late Bissoon was a former leading wicketkeeper/opening batsman who played for several central Trinidad clubs in a long and successful career.

During the function Councillor Danan Singh (Edinburgh/Longdenville), chairman of the Sports Committee of the Chaguanas Borough Corporation praised an initiative to assist cricket clubs in central Trinidad to get their grounds ready for the 2012 season. He deemed it a big success and promised the Chaguanas Borough Corporation will extend the effort next year.
