‘Stars’ on parade in the Maiden Stakes over twelve furlongs of Wolverhampton polytrack today when a seven-race programme will attract a professional element, plenty of opportunities on what is reckoned the best AWR surface by jockeys/trainers. John Gosden ‘cut his teeth’ as a trainer in USA and would be an authority on all-weather tracks. He has no hesitation bringing out quality thoroughbreds at any of our courses and was on the mark with Rasheed, at Kempton last Saturday.
That was impressive and Rasheed is a progressive type worth following, just the sort I’d like to own. Stable-companion, Stars In Your Eyes faces what should be a simple task and with Nicky Mackay gaining confidence, by virtue of association with the powerful Gosden yard, I’m happy to nap this thrice-raced Galileo filly, which needs to win for stud purposes. Indeed, Stars In Your Eyes could be whisked straight off to paddocks, if successful, because the Northern Hemisphere breeding season commences on Wednesday, February 15th.
Mark Johnston has been knocking in winners right, left and centre and he’s the reason why stable-jockey, Joe Fanning is challenging strongly for the winter jockeys’ championship. The ‘A-team’ looks set for another winner with consistent, hitherto luckless Enery, in the five-runner, 3-y-o handicap over ten furlongs. No ‘cert’ by any means but Enery comes out best on my time-handicap and is worth a decent punt. So is Good Timin in the thirteen-runner, ‘aged’ handicap over five furlongs. These races are trappy and should be avoided but Good Timin is in tremendous form, berthed to make a typical quick start under Philip Makin, a top-notch jockey and sticks out like a beacon, having gone close only five days ago. Good, recent form counts for much, especially where sprinters are concerned.
