Jamol James was named co-freshman of the week in the Southern Conference (SEC) following his win in the men's 60m dash at the Akron Invitational on February 11. The 19-year-old clocked 6.72 in only his second month since arriving at the University of Tennessee which puts him at number 12 on Tennessee's all time list over 60m. James now has the tenth best time in the SEC and is one of four freshmen sprinters in the NCAA's top's 35 this season. The achievement comes following fellow Tennessee team-mate Annie Alexander's top female field athlete of the week award in January.
James is 119th on the latest IAAF World Indoor 2012 list which is the fourth quickest T&T sprinter. Double Olympic silver medallist Richard Thompson is 8th (6.56), Keston Thompson (30th- 6.62) and Marc Burns (42nd -6.64).
James will be going for another victory at the SEC Indoor Championships which take place in Kentucky this weekend while Alexander will be aiming for her second indoor Conference title in the women's shot put.
Alexander took the gold in 2008 and was runner up in 2009 and 2010. She missed the 2011 indoor season due to injury and will be going into this weekend's meet as number one.
