GEORGE­TOWN-The pres­i­dent of Guyana's em­bat­tled crick­et board re­signed yes­ter­day af­ter po­lice in­vad­ed his home and those of oth­er top of­fi­cials in an es­ca­lat­ing feud with the gov­ern­ment. Ram­say Al­li said court of­fi­cials seized fi­nan­cial doc­u­ments and oth­er pa­pers at his of­fice and home and at the homes of board sec­re­tary Anand Senasee, past pres­i­dent Chetram Singh, and an­oth­er trustee, Li­onel Jaikar­ran. As­sis­tant Po­lice Com­mis­sion­er See­lall Per­saud con­firmed the raids, which oc­curred on Mon­day.

"Po­lice were there on­ly to en­sure peace was kept," he said. Al­li said on­go­ing pres­sure from the gov­ern­ment in the last nine months had tak­en a toll on his pri­vate and pro­fes­sion­al life. The dis­pute be­gan with board elec­tions in mid-2011. Bick­er­ing fac­tions prompt­ed the gov­ern­ment, tired of the in­fight­ing and al­le­ga­tions of cor­rup­tion, to ap­point an in­ter­im man­age­ment com­mit­tee to take con­trol of Guyana's crick­et af­fairs, backed by the Guyana High Court rul­ing the GCB a le­gal nonen­ti­ty.
