Goal-shooter Nariba Grant helped Fire get revenge on Police beating them, 28-21, to eliminate the policewomen from the Championship Division knockout competition in the Courts All Sectors Netball League. On Saturday, the police officers edged the firewomen 40-39, to capture the division's league title.
On Tuesday evening at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Tacarigua, it was an entirely new ball game with a determined Fire team, dominating for much of the match. Grant, who ended with a match-high 21 goals off 33 attempts, had Fire on top at the half, 17-11. Her combination with Lee-Ann O'Brien (7/13) finally bore fruit as Fire held to outscore Police, 11-10 in the second half and advance to the next round to meet surprise finalist, the University of the West Indies (UWI).
The University girls, who got their second win of the season coincidently again against Jabloteh, 23-20, in the second match of the triple-header played that evening. The opening match was won by Police after T&T Hospitality and Tourism Institute (TTHTI) defaulted their Alternative Division knockout match. UWI, thanks to the effort of Abeni Taylor and Roanta Dalrymple, had UWI ahead 15-12 at the halfway mark. The duo were key in UWI's previous win, 33-28 over Jabloteh also on Saturday. Taylor topscored with 17 off 27 and Dalrymple added the other six from ten tries. For Jabloteh, Jocelyn Marcelle scored 11 in 14 and Samantha James had nine off 17. The knockout competitions continue today in the Premiership and Alternative Divisions.
