T&T's Kale Wilson won the "A" division of the Toronto Mayfair Open graded squash tournament in Canada which concluded on Sunday. Wilson, a freshman at the University of Western Ontario (UWO), beat top seed, Adrian Pond, 3-1 in the final. Earlier, he started his march to victory by defeating Bill Lam 3-1 and followed up with an easy 3-0 win over Josh Ginou to advance to the semifinals. In the afternoon the Caribbean boys under-19 champion continued his fine form when he secured himself a spot in the finals after whipping number two seed, Carter Robitaille, 3-0, in their semifinal match before going on to take the title. The victory comes after Wilson attended a one-week training programme in Toronto at the National Squash Academy headed by Jonathan Power, a former world number one player.
Wilson ended his junior career last year when taking the Caribbean boys under-19 championship in July. This was the first time that T&T won the title in the Caribbean championship in 20 years. Upon his enrollment as a freshman at UWO in September, Wilson immediately became a member of the varsity squash team. UWO has retained their number one position in squash among universities in Canada for the past 29 years with their latest title being won earlier this month. The team now looks forward to making a record 30 consecutive years in the top position in 2013.
