Mandela Patrick showed his younger brother, Nku, who was still in charge as he smashed his way to first place in the boys under-19 final of the T&T Squash Association's (T&TSA) Junior Fun Tournament which concluded on Saturday. The tournament saw more than 33 players, including two from Barbados and one from Venezuela, participate in the event held at the Cascadia Squash Club from March 1-3. The boys under-19 semifinals saw Mandela and Nku face Venezuela's Miguel Mendez and Alex Mckay respectively. Mendez really made Mandela work for his victory as he triumphed over the national player 11-7 in their second set, prior to conceding a 11-9 defeat in the first set. However Mandela was determined to overcome his opponent, securing himself an 11-7 win in the third set and a spot in the finals. Meanwhile the younger Patrick easily made his way to the under-19 final after crushing Mckay 11-4, 11-6.
The final between the two siblings proved to be the highlight of the day as the two kept the scores locked very closely in their four-set battle for supremacy. Nku was out to show his older brother that he was not to be taken lightly as he took the first set 9-11. But Mandela was the one who had the edge in the following sets 11-8, 11-9, 11-9, eventually handing him the under-19 crown. Chad Salandy was named the boys under-15 champion after getting the upper hand on James Lanser in the latter sets 6-11, 11-5, 11-7. This follows Salandy's emphatic 11-4, 11-6 semifinal win over Jonathan Blanc. The boys under-13 and under-17 titles were taken by Sebastian Krogh and Christian Edghill respectively.
