Davis breaks national 60m hurdles record

Wayne Davis...set national men’s 60m hurdles indoor record.

Wayne Davis II set a national men’s 60m hurdles indoor record of 7.70 seconds when he finished seventh on the final day of action at the 2012 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division One Indoor Track and Field Championships in Idaho, USA, on Saturday. The Texas A&M student improved the 7.73 clocking set by Mikel Thomas two years ago. The American-born hurdler whose parents are both Trinidadians, previously competed for the USA before switching to the homeland of his parents earlier this year. In 2007 he raced to the World Youth 110m gold in US colours and set a world junior record of 13.08 in taking the event at the 2009 Pan American Junior Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. 

 
Ade Alleyne-Forte was the lone T&T athlete to medal as he was part of LSU’s team which finished third in the men’s 4X400m relay finals in 3:05:80. Alleyne-Forte did third leg duties clocking a 46.51 split. Deon Lendore was unable to help Texas A&M hold on to its title after the team was disqualified.  Lendore ran the third leg in 45.95.  Mississippi State with Emmanuel Mayers in the lineup was fourth in 3:05:93 ahead of Zwede Hewitt and his Baylor team-mates back in seventh (3:07:86). Baylor was second in 2011. Kyron Blaise (LSU) was tenth in the men’s triple jump qualifiers with 15.74.  He did not advance to the medal round as only the top nine qualified. 
 
LSU was fifth (27) in the men’s points standing with Texas A&M in eighth (22). Mississippi State finished 22nd (9.5) ahead of Baylor in 35th (6) Among the women Kai Sevlon (Auburn) was seventh in the women’s 60m finals in 7.29 while Annie Alexander (Tennessee) was 12th in the women’s shot put.  In the NCAAA Division Two Championships, in Mankota, Minnesota, Karla Hope anchored Abilene Christian University to seventh in the women’s 4X400m relay finals in 3:50:06. Abilene Christian was second in the second section. Earlier in the competition Hope was 13th in the women’s 400m heats in 57.10, finishing fourth in the third preliminary. Her school finished joint 14th in the women’s team standing on 12 points.
